Do you need a web site? Are you considering getting one but are unsure? Here we take a look at the main reasons why a web site could be beneficial to your organisation.

a) It will give you the competitive edge

If you do not have a web site people cannot visit it – an obvious point you might say. But if your competitors have web sites people will be visiting them! These people are your potential customers! Remember also that many businesses have yet to get online, therefore a web site will give you the competitive edge.

b) It will be an effective method of advertising

A web site is not a substitute for other advertising media but works very successfully alongside it to enhance your image. You can add your domain name to other printed media - flyers, business cards, signs etc; these are places where many people expect to find your web site details nowadays. They will then expect to go to your web site for further information.

c) It will enhance your credibility

People these days will expect you to have a web site. If they hear about your organisation the first thing many of them will do will be to look on the Internet to see if they can find your web site. If you do not have one they may perceive you to be less credible and may not believe you are a ‘real’ business. Even worse they may stumble across your competitors and forget all about you.

d) It will enhance your communication efforts

Communication with potential customers and clients is of huge importance. A web site can provide all of your contact details, including email addresses. Many people prefer to make contact via email, as it is quick, easy, cheap and convenient. You can even include interactive features, such as feedback forms and customer query forms. People can sign up for a mailing list to receive information on your latest products and services.

e) It will be available around the clock

Your web site works for you day and night to give you constant coverage. Internet users can access your information regardless of whether or not it is business hours. You can reach current and potential customers 24 hours a day. It is almost like having an extra office that is always open!

Benefits of CSS

Fast download time:

CSS downloads faster than tables because:

  • Browsers read through tables twice before displaying their contents, once to work out their structure and once to determine their content
  • Tables appear on the screen all in one go - no part of the table will appear until the entire table is downloaded and rendered
  • Tables encourage the use of spacer images to aid with positioning
  • CSS generally requires less code than cumbersome tables
  • All code to do with the layout can be placed in an external CSS document, which will be called up just once and then cached (stored) on the user's computer; table layout, stored in each HTML document, must be loaded up each time a new page downloads
  • With CSS you can control the order items download on to the screen - make the content appear before slow-loading images and your site users will definitely appreciate it

More search engine-friendly:

Search engines can often spider CSS -driven web pages more easily as they usually have simpler, better structured HTML code . The search engine can then make a more educated guess as to what the web page is about, so all other things being equal, your web pages will appear higher in the search rankings with a CSS layout.

More accessible:

The number of users browsing the web through handheld devices is growing massively. In 2008 alone an estimated 58 million PDA s will be sold (source: eTForecast 3 ) and one third of the world's population will own a wireless device (source: ClickZ 4 ). You can make an additional CSS document specifically for handheld devices, which will be called up in place of the regular CSS document. This is not possible with a tabular layout.

Print-friendly:

When a user chooses to print a web page an alternative CSS document can be called up. This document can specify that formatting, images and navigation disappear and just the page content appear on the printed version.

Inter-Browser Compatibility:

More and more pc users are increasingly turning to alternative browsers for browsing the Internet. Over 20% now use non Internet explorer browser. Each browser handles html and table designs slightly differently, creating havoc between browsers. What works in one, doesn't in another etc. Using XHTML/CSS increasingly provides solutions to this issue, creating a website that looks perfect in all current browsers.

Future Proofing:

With every new release of a browser, the way it handles code is altered to provide up to date provision of web technology. Increasingly, support for table based designs are being limited, what works in version 6, maybe very well not work in version 7. With CSS, not only you have a current up to date website, but you are assured that your website will not 'break' with future software releases.

Hosting Technical Data

Network connectivity:

Both data centres have at least three dedicated gigabit fibre uplinks which take diverse routes via road and railways to a central London-based multi-point gigabit ring. From there the connections are peered with all the major UK backbones. Internal to the datacentres, we ensure that there is no single point of failure up until the connection reaches your server. To do this we double-up on equipment such as routers, switches and firewall's in a mirrored configuration with a heart-beat monitor between the two sets.

Power:

As well as short-term Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) systems there are multiple diesel generators at both sites, with a minimum of 96 hours fuel on-site, giving you total protection you from power failures.

Hardware:

We use high-quality DELL & SUN hardware in order to minimize the risk of failure. Most of our dedicated servers also use RAID(1), providing additional resilience against disk failures. We also keep hot-standby equipment on-site so that even in the most catastrophic server failure event we can simply swap the disks into a new, identical chassis.

Security:

There is a 24/7 on-site security presence with 24/7 internal CC-TV monitoring. In addition there are comprehensive security procedures including proximity access control and a hi-tech weigh-in weigh-out entry system. Only authorized personnel even have access to the servers.

Fire:

The data centres are equipped with the fire detection systems and halon-gas fire suppression systems.

Maintenance:

All critical systems, such as UPS, generators and backup network links are tested on a regular basis to ensure that they are ready in the event of a real failure.
